RECYCLING AND REUSING
The Christchurch City Council have a lot of information about what to do with your rubbish, including damaged carpet from the earthquake, and silt. Jump onto their site to view this by clicking above.
What we are interested in on this site, is what we can do with our rubbish, can we use it for something else?, and will it be useful to keep?
By re-using something you are saving money in two ways, both reducing the original cost and by saving a further purchase.

HOT TIPS
- Keep all your supermarket bags, bread bags and vege bags. Put them through the washing machine with a cycle when you next wash and peg them on the line to dry. They can be used as bin liners, freezer bags and sandwich/lunch bags.
- Compact all rubbish down. Squash well with your foot.
- Take cardboard and boxes to your local kindy or playcentre, or use as kindling on the fire.
- Keep paper and make fire bricks! When you have a whole bucket of papers, spend 10mins ripping them into shreds and soak in a bucket for 2 or 3 days. They squeeze with your hand into balls just larger than an orange. Leave to dry for a few weeks. They burn like wood on the fire. Or you can buy a brick maker, in which you put the pulp and squeeze it into brick sized blocks, off www.magnamail.co.nz.
- When shirts, t-shirts etc get holey, cut them into big squares and edge on the sewing machin (to prevent fluffy edges fraying everywhere), use as dishcloths and cleaning cloths.
- Your local school, playcentre or kindy will appreciate bottle lids, milk tops, corks etc
- Throw all food scraps into a bucket or bowl and compost in the garden.
- Think about having chooks, you get eggs in return for garden scraps...visit www.heslipshatcheries.co.nz.
