KEEPING HEALTHY
Keeping Positive
- Keep your friends around you, and actively maintain your friendships.
- Invite people to come over for coffee, or to have a chat.
- Start a new hobby, learn something new.
- Volunteer somewhere.
- Try to think and voice positive statements, it really helps if you have "mind over matter".
- Take the dog for a walk, if you don't have a dog then take your neighbours dog for a walk. Any exercise will increase the hormones that keep you in balance and feeling good.
- Try to do a random act of kindness once a week.
Eating Well
Good nutrition keeps your body healthy and your mind clear. Fresh food prepared well is the key. Check out our section in Do it Yourself on gardening, both for those with and without a section, as supplementing what you buy with what you can grow is beneficial.
Try to avoid takeaways, fatty foods and too much food.
There is a mountain of information available on the web, try these for starters -
Healthy Food NZ - you will have to sift out the adverts but there is some good content there
Dieticians NZ - this is not just for dieters, it is for everyone, and has some great recipes etc

Keeping Warm
If your primary heating source was damaged in the earthquakes, contact EQC on 0800 DAMAGE and ask about the Winter Heating Programme.
Contact Community Energy Action (CEA) Ph: 0800 388 588, or www.cea.co.nz/earthquake for more ideas on keeping warm over winter.
Don't underestimate the power of WOOL - when buying secondhand jumpers, hats etc, ensure you buy woollen products. Fleece comes a good secondbest but forget everything else. Cotton is a big no-no as it provides very little warmth.
Check out the Do It Yourself section of this website to learn how to sew, knit and more. Also the Save on Electricity section for how to use your electricity wisely.

Keeping Clean Round the House
It is not necessary to buy a large amount of single purpose cleaners. Try to avoid overbuying on stain removers, softeners, bleaches, window cleaners, polishes etc. They are expensive and in fact very easy to make in your very own home. If you click on this link it will take you to the part of our site devoted to Cleanliness.
