- Washing Powder
- Washing Up Liquid
- Toilet Cleaner
- Cream Cleaner
WASHING POWDER
- Choose a cheap, cold water product, such as "Cold Power"
- To remove stains from most everyday clothes always try and treat while the stain is fresh. Make a paste of powder and a little water. Dampen the stain and pour on the paste. Scrub with a nail brush or similar on both the front and back of the stain. Put item in through with your normal wash. With a little persistence this works with most ordinary stains. Do be careful with more delicate items.
WASHING UP LIQUID
- Try to buy in bulk, by this in 2l or more bottles. You can decant into smaller bottles for use
- Dust furniture etc with a cloth slightly dampened in soapy water.
- Use to wash windows - 1 bucket H2O, 2T washing up liquid and 1/2c vinegar.
- Clean mirrors with a slightly damp cloth and polish off with a dry cloth.
- Use to clean the car in same quantities as the windows.
- To clean the oven, put a dish of H2O in the oven, heat to 180C for 20 mins or so. The steam generated should soften any baked on stuff. Scrub with H2O and washing up liquid.
TOILET CLEANER
- Speaks for itself really, just use your favourite product.
CREAM CLEANER
- For the bath and handbasin.
NON ESSENTIALS
Some recipes for items that are often quite expensive at the supermarket, but which are easily made at home cheaply.
LIQUID SOAP FOR HANDS OR SHOWER
Take a cake of your favourite hard soap and grate off about 2T, put these gratings into a small bowl and add 1litre of boiling water. Stir it up. Go back to it a few times over the course of the cooling, just to check all the soap has dissolved. It will go glue like, and can easily be pumped in a hand pump bottle for use at the sink or in the shower.
TOOTHPASTE
In the good old days my Mum had us use salt if we ran out of toothpaste, as it is a good abraisive and also antibacterial. Try this: mix 4T iodised salt, and 2T baking soda, moisten with peppermint flavouring. To use just dip your brush in and away you go...minty, salty and fresh!
